Indawo was appointed to refurbish and waterproof the upper-level parking area at Palm Grove Shopping Centre in Durbanville, which was experiencing significant water ingress affecting the stores located directly beneath the parking deck.
Project Scope
The project involved the complete reconstruction and waterproofing of the parking area base. The key challenges included:
• Preventing disruption to tenants and retail operations below the parking deck
• Managing noise levels during demolition
• Ensuring safety in a high-traffic, public-facing environment
Smart Solutions, Minimal Disruption
Initial demolition work using conventional impact methods generated excessive noise. To address this, Indawo implemented an alternative low-noise demolition solution, allowing the project to continue without impacting the day-to-day operations of surrounding tenants.
Construction & Waterproofing Process
• Reinforced Concrete Walls: Indawo constructed formwork and cast new reinforced concrete walls to support the newly designed parking area structure.
• Tiling and Detailing: Walkways surrounding the parking area were neatly tiled up to the newly built concrete walls.
• Screeding & Waterproofing: A new screed was laid across the surface, followed by the application of a torch-on waterproofing system to ensure long-term water resistance.
• Final Surface & Markings: The top layer was finished with a tarred surface, and parking bays were demarcated with clear road markings.
Health & Safety
Given the proximity to active retail spaces, strict health and safety protocols were enforced throughout the project. Ingozi Management, Indawo’s Health & Safety partner, ensured full compliance with Occupational Health & Safety standards.
Result: A fully waterproofed, durable, and safe upper-level parking area with minimal disruption to tenants and customers - delivered on time and to the highest standards.
